When it comes to the age of the city some scientists say that the birth of Lugansk happened approximately in 1795 after the decree of Ekaterina II. This is when the city started to grow and many plants and factories were built here. One of the biggest was Lugansk cast iron foundry plant. By the way, famous English specialists of that time such as Carl Gaskoyn, Adam Smith, Ivan Robertson and Daniel Mckly made a significant contribution to the building of the plant. So since the very foundation Lugansk became an industrial center of Ukraine. Locomotive, Pipe, Machine-building, Brick and Weapon plants were built a bit later.
Lugansk is also known by some famous people that were born here. They put a great contribution into the development of Russian culture and literature. One of them was Vladimir Dal (born on November 10th 1801). He created First Explanatory Dictionary of Russian language. Currently there is a museum of Dal in the house where he lived. There are some more museums in the city such the museum of local law, history and economy and art gallery.
The territory of Lugansk region is 26,7 thousand square kilometers, the quantity of population is 2507 thousand people. The administrative center is Lugansk city.
Lugansk province is traditionally one of the most powerful industrial-economic regions of Ukraine. The outstanding industrial and scientific-technical potential of our region has been developing for decades, and along with highly qualified personnel and advanced industrial infrastructure. A favorable peculiarity of our region is its position of a transit territory on border with Russia.
Lugansk is the cradle of south metallurgy and all industry of Donbass. Presently Lugansk region is one of the most developed industrial-agrarian regions of the country. It is the Region of talented and industrious people, generous natural resources, and enormous possibilities of deep comprehensive further socio-economic transformations.
Production of Lugansk region has the steady dynamics of growth during the last five years. Annually the products for the sum over 13 milliards UAH are produced, the part of industrial complex of Lugansk Region in the total Ukrainian production volume grew to 7,5 percent. The region provides the fourth part of coal in the country, metal-cutting machine-tools, electric motors, calcinated soda, one six of oil production, steel pipes, mineral fertilizers, synthetic ammonia, knitwear. The region has the complete cycle of planning and production of the automated systems of complicated technological processes in atomic energy, mobile railway and communal transport, rotor automated lines, engineering constructions from composition materials.
Coal-mining industry, metallurgy, chemistry and petro-chemistry, machine building, sewing industry and others are basic branches of industrial sector.
