If you are fed up with the rush of city and it's hectic pace, there is no better place for taking a well-deserved rest that in the Carpathians. Even time takes completely different dimension here. It's here in the Ukrainian Carpathians where the geographic center of Europe is located. The development of this region has been heavily influenced by the many cultures of the different countries which through the agency have called the Carpathians their own. Ecologists maintain that the Carpathians remain a place where the rivers and the air uniquely clean and clear.
The Carpathian region managed to preserve a great number of defence constructions and palaces witnessing a great deal of historical upheavals. Here you can visit numerous castles from the 11th-17th centuries, which in different eras were owned by Polish, Austro-Hungarians, Lithuanians and Russians. In Europe, there remain only five other castles so finely preserved as "Palanok" Castle. In the 14th century the cornerstone was laid for the castle which, was later made into an impregnable fortress by French engineers. Moreover, after the fall of the Bastille, a world-renowned French prison, it was Mukachevsky castle that became an all-European political prison. Today even though "Palanok" Castle has lots its strategic role, it still maintains one of the most important military and architecture monuments of both Europe and Ukraine complete with its cozy patios, bastions and old chambers with a distinct knights' air.

If rest without excitement is not your cup of tea, then the Carpathian region is a real boon for you. During April and May much of the snow in the mountains melts, creating ideal conditions for one to go rafting along the rivers Prut, Bilyi and Chornyi Cheremosh. As for the canyon of the Dniester, it waits for you from May till September. Hunters can hunt a wild boar, roe deer, wolf and other game. There is a special season for hunting and a forestry agent or a competent travel agent will help you with the license. Moreover, there are some paragliding and sports aviation centers in the Carpathians. You can also enjoy a bike rides, mountain climbing or a mountaineering tutorial. As for horseback riding, it is a natural thing in the mountain areas therefore you should ask your guide about riding a special Hutsul breed of horse. Calm and amiable "Hutsulyky," as they are called here, are considered one of the best mountain breeds.

Who was the first to call the Carpathian Mountains the blue ones and why is this not so well known? They are actually green, but it is for you to judge. You might also think that the forests, rivers, lakes or the shroud is of blue color. But irrespective of the color and the season, you will feel inexplicable harmony and the beauty of the world around you when in the Carpathians. Have you ever seen the whole valley of wild daffodils in bloom? You can marvel at this sight only in Khoust, home of the only reserve of narrow-leaved daffodils in Europe. Among the gems of the Carpathians there is the biggest lake of the region, the fantastic Synevyr so named after an ancient legend about the passionate love of a girl named Synya and a youth called Vyr. According to the folk tales, those who declared their love in this place will never get divorced. In summer the highland scenery is complemented by herds of sheep. Therefore, if you come across a shepherd, don't be surprised at his national costume. You see, here in the Ukrainian Carpathians, traditions have been kept alive since times of old. Taste the fresh sheep cheese and listen to the sounds of trembitas, which are the longest musical instruments in the world. The length of this cone-shaped pipe reaches four meters. From time immemorial the sound of trembitas informed highlanders about important events. Tourists will be happy to know that the perfect marriage of tradition and convenience has been performed just for them with nearby recreation centers, hotels and small cottages in the mountains. As Socrates said "Our health is not everything, but without health the rest is nothing". The Carpathians have a lot to offer those who wish to strengthen or restore their health, since the climate and balneological resorts have the traditions of centuries. The region discovered "wellness" therapy way back during the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Not without good reason! The clean and clear air, mineral springs and the cleanest mountain rives in Europe. You can enjoy all that of mineral springs, each with different healing powers. However, the bulk of visitors go to the Trouskavets to taste the medicinal "Naftusya". Sanatoriums of Svalayva in Zakarpattya and Morshyn in Prykarpattya together with many others welcome visitors with their spas. However, you should be careful, since water from the mineral springs have tremendous healing power, therefore you should consult a doctor before partaking.
